Why doesn't the game start but only download / display a file?

You need a valid Java Runtime Environment with Java Webstart on your system. Follow these instructions.

What is Java or Java Webstart?

Java is a web application software by Sun Microsystems. Modern browsers and operating systems normally have a so-called Java Runtime Environment (JRE) pre-installed that is needed to run Supremacy 1914.

How can I install Java to play Supremacy 1914?

We have set up a help page that tries to automatically guide you through the installation. Please follow this link.

The page will detect if you've got the correct Java version installed, let you download it if it could not be found and will start the demo game as soon as everything is working.

Are there any problems with firewalls?

Some users reported problems with firewalls. If your client window opens but you can't connect, try forwarding ports 1099 and (if it still does not work) 23418 in the NAT & port-forwarding settings of your router and/or software firewall.

How do I set up Mozilla Firefox / Iceweasel?

• Download and install Java.
• Open Firefox / Iceweasel and
1. go to: Tools > Options.
2. Select the tab "Content".
3. Check activate Java.
• Click "OK" and that's it.

Can you help setting up Firefox / Iceweasel on Linux? I've still got problems.

If you have downloaded and installed Java from the link provided above, you can check if your browser recognizes the new plugin. Enter about:plugins in the address field of the browser. The page you will see should actually list Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U1 (or a similar version number). If it is not contained in the list, the browser did not recognize Java.

Here is what you can do if that is the case:

1. Open a console.
2. Type java --version it should give you a printout similar to this:
   java version "1.6.0_01"
   Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_01-b06)
   Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 1.6.0_01-b06, mixed mode
3. If you do not get this output, try to install Java again from this link.
4. If you got the output, determine where Java is installed:
   whereis java (e.g.: /usr/bin/java)
   ls -l /usr/bin/java (e.g.: /usr/bin/java -> /opt/jre1.6.0_01/bin/java)
5. That would mean, Java is installed in /opt/jre1.6.0_01.
6. Switch your directory to cd ~/.mozilla/plugins
7. Create a link to the plugin:
   ln -s /opt/jre1.6.0_01/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
8. Restart your browser, go to about:plugins and you should see Java listed there. The Java test at this page should then tell you that you have set up Java correctly.
   

 

How do I set up MS Internet Explorer?

The installer found at the download link should suffice to activate Java in the Internet Explorer. If it does not work try out these steps:

1. Click "Tools" --> "Internet Options"
2. Select the Advanced Tab, and scroll down to "Java (Sun)"
3. Check the box next to the "Use Java 2" version
4. Next, select the Security Tab, and select the "Custom Level" button
5. Scroll down to "Scripting of Java applets"
6. Make sure the "Enable" radio button is checked.
7. Click OK to save your preference.

How do I set up Opera?

• Download and install Java.
• Open Opera and
1. go to: Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Downloads.
   
2. Click "Add" and add the following info:
• MIME Type: application/x-java-jnlp-file
  
• File Extension: jnlp
• Action: Open with default application
  
• Click "OK" and that's it.

Can I force the game client to be updated / downloaded again?

If you notice problems to connect to the game after we have updated the system, it might (in rare cases) be due to a problem with Java Webstart not refreshing your application. Although that is actually  exactly what Java Webstart promises to the user, you can force the client to be updated in those moments by going to the command prompt and run:

  javaws -viewer

Then, in the Java Cache Viewer, select everything that is released by Supremacy1914.com or that has Supremacy 1914 in the application name and press the big red X to remove the cached files. Close the window and the control panel in the background and try starting the game again.  

I'm having Problems with the 64bit version of the Java RE

The 64 bit version of the Java Runtime Environment currently does not support java webstart, the technology used to download and run the Supremacy1914 client. Please install a 32bit version of the Java Runtime to solve this problem.
